Whether part of the fire protection design for a new building or evaluating fire risk in an existing space, understanding the fundamental requirements for fire-resistive construction is essential. For fire protection engineers, architects, contractors, and code enforcement officials, this presentation provides an overview of ASTM E119, Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials, compares the standard’s test fire to exposures that can be expected during real fires, and reviews the pass-fail criteria for the ASTM E119 fire test. The presentation then demonstrates how to identify requirements for fire resistive construction and provides steps to select appropriate fire resistive designs. Where such designs are not suitable, methods of finding alternative solutions are also discussed.  Finally, the presentation closes with three brief case studies.
